Impact of Trauma in Schools

Students and staff with high rates of trauma can negatively impact the school climate and setting for learning.  Students who struggle with trauma and how to respond to it may quickly escalate and act out in ways that compromise their own safety and others.

Adults may be more rigid and reactive when faced with crises or uncertainty.  They may overreact to students, threatening them with harsh consequences.  Adults could also inflict tougher discipline strategies in an effort to gain control.  Those who struggle to address their own trauma may have difficulty working with children who have traumatic experiences and could overlook its effect on children.  Neglecting to address trauma can jeopardize a school’s ability to promote success among its students.

What Should we Do?

By recognizing the prevalence and impact of trauma in childhood, schools can help children succeed.  As early childhood and school-age professionals become more knowledgeable and informed, they can show understanding and support to children.  They can respond appropriately to trauma-related behavior and provide an appropriate learning environment.

Think About It Questions:

  •  How is your school talking about trauma and its effects?
  • What steps have you or your school taken to adopt a trauma-sensitive approach?
